Safety Pilot
Who is a Safety Pilot?
A safety pilot is . . .
- a person capable of piloting a drone without stabilizing features, using only the remote controller (similar to racing/FPV drones)
- someone who can take over control of the drone at any moment, ensuring safe piloting and landing
- a person who understands all flight modes and can assess dangerous situations
A safety pilot is not . . .
- the same person operating the computer
- someone who thinks they can pilot the drone—they must know they can
note
Avoid overestimating your piloting skills, especially if you have never flown a similar type of drone. Overconfidence can quickly result in serious injuries or damage to the drone.
importantly
Make sure you know and abide to your local laws for flying a drone and that you are flying in a safe area.
What is the Safety Pilot responsible for?
Remote Controller
- only the safety pilot handles the remote controller (RC)
- is mindful of the RC current settings
- does not play with the RC, especially when other person is handeling the drone
Flight Monitoring
- monitors behaviour of the drone all the time
- interrupts the flight or procedure if anything seems or goes wrong
- takes over and manually fly the drone to safety
Battery Monitoring
- knows how the battery works and how is the voltage level monitored
- knows what happens if battery is low (e.g., buzzer sounds loudly)
- responds promptly by landing the drone if the battery is low
